Project History
Libraries in the 5 county Winnefox area began keeping vital records as early as 1944, with records dating back much further. Some were maintained in card files, some in clipped obituaries, and eventually some computer indexes were created.
In the early 2000s, one by one, these indexes were migrated into searchable online indexes.By 2011, patrons doing genealogy research in the Winnefox area might have had to search up to 7 separate databases to locate records:
- Fond du Lac, Wisconsin Vital Statistics Index
- Local Vital Records Index (covering Green Lake County & Omro)
- Neenah Obituary Index
- Oshkosh Vital Records Index
- Ripon Obituary Index
- Waushara County Obituary Database
- Winneconne, Wisconsin Vital Records Search
The idea of creating one shared database was discussed a number of times over the years and in 2017-18 became a reality.
This online searchable vital statistics index wouldn't be accessible here without the hard work and dedication of many library volunteers,
local genealogical societies, staff from contributing libraries, Winnefox Library System staff and a bright intern from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
